Well the royals arrived last night, they had to keep their sunglasses on because the Casa was fucking GLEAMING !!!!
We’re doing the tourist guide bit today, which we both enjoy too. It’s a place called The Valley of the Nuns. In Portuguese, it’s Curral das Freiras.
What a stunning place. The history is that in 1566, the French pirates invaded the island. They rampaged through Funchal, raping and pillaging.
The nuns that didn’t fancy any raping and pillaging escaped to the Curral. The ones that did (fancy it) stayed in Funchal!!!!!

The viewpoint, in Portuguese is called a Miradouro it’s at 1096m above sea level and an absolute must see. There is also a hotel. It is especially good for hikers but is a long way from Funchal. It is called Eira do Serrado Hotel and Spa.

The view is spectacular and overlooks the little village of Curral das Freiras. The area is known for chestnuts. These are served hot in the restaurant in the village, (with a Poncha).
A mate of mine (John) was visiting one time and I took him here. He had a fear of heights hahaha. As he made it to the fence, he put his hands on (shitting himself) I shook it. I have never heard a grown man scream so high Hahahaha.
There are a few shops, a couple of restaurants and the chapel.

Also a must see is a little museum showing how they lived years ago.

A really lovely place.
Sis and Tony were amazed.
The roads getting there are fun too.
We went with Tony and Sis for dinner, to another of our favourite places. A place called Restaurante O Polar or Pico to the locals.

It’s only a small place. It’s very local and down to earth. It has the BEST Espetadas and chicken on Madeira (in our opinion). We love it there.
It’s a favourite of locals and tourists. A small menu…Espetadas, Chicken, Milho (Polenta), Fries and Salad, no frills but delicious. Be aware they don’t take bookings and only accept cash.
